How much does an electric tugger or tow tug cost?

The first question you’ve probably got when it comes to electric tuggers, tows, and pushers, is how much do they cost.

The answer is that electric tugger pricing is influenced by a range of important factors and considerations.

Our approach at MasterMover is to ensure that any solution we deliver, whether the application is a simple one to move roll cages, or the more complex movement of 176,00 lbs. wind turbine blades, is the right solution that will deliver time and time again.

Electric tuggers and tow tugs are typically grouped by their load handling capacity or maximum load weight. However, in addition to load weight, several other core factors play a part in determining the specification and price of an electric tug.

What factors impact electric tugger prices?

Electric tuggers, tow tugs and pushers are specified on an application basis to ensure any solution delivers quantifiable safety and efficiency gains for you right out of the box.

Here, we’ve summarized some of the key variables that influence the cost of a machine.

Weight capacity - icon

Maximum load weight

The maximum weight you want to move heavily influences the most suitable specification and model of the electric tugger.

You may hear suppliers talk about push/pull forces, which are the outputs machines deliver.

At a basic level, the heavier the total load weight, the more power is needed from the machine to push, pull and stop it, in a safe and controlled way.

Rolling resistance

One of the most critical factors to consider is the force needed to start a wheeled load moving, known as rolling resistance.

Higher rolling resistances require more effort from the machine to achieve movement, increasing the specification needed.

Three key areas have a considerable impact on rolling resistance:

All terrain

Floor condition & material

A smooth, good-condition floor reduces rolling resistance. The floor condition and material influence the force needed to move a load and a machine’s ability to gain traction.

Swivel castor

Castor wheels

The configuration, quantity and quality of castor wheels impact the force needed from an electric tugger to move the load.

Moving on slopes

Slopes

Moving a heavy wheeled load up or down an incline has a greater rolling resistance than moving a load on the flat. A simple rule of thumb, the steeper the slope, the more powerful the electric tugger needs to be.

Coupling & connection

This is how the electric tugger will connect to your load or cart.

The connection point is a critical aspect of the application as it determines how secure your load is and for many machines, the coupling is fundamental in moving such heavy weights.

Electric tuggers, tows and pushers have an array of standard coupling options but where a standardized connection point can’t be achieved, a custom coupling may be required.

Material types & environmental ratings

The construction material selected for the electric tugger or specialist environmental protection such as explosion proofing are all areas that can influence the cost of the equipment.

Stainless steel

Stainless Steel

Standard electric tuggers are manufactured with a mild-steel construction, suitable to work in most manufacturing environments. However, for specialist environments requiring specific levels of cleanliness or corrosion-resistant materials, stainless steel is often a preferred material of construction.

IP rating

Ingress Protection

IP rating is another area where specific needs often influence pricing and electric tugger design.

Increased IP ratings for liquid and dust protection are available.

Hazardous environments

Explosion-proofing

For environments that have potentially explosive atmospheres, additional environmental protection is required to protect the equipment against potentially flammable gases or combustible dust.

Technology

While the majority of MasterMover electric tuggers are pedestrian operated as standard, you have the option to select a range of enhanced technology options, such as wireless remote control, line-follow navigation, and even fully autonomous (AGV) solutions.

Remote control

Remote control

Utilizing Remote Control options offers a range of benefits.

Remote Control capability is available via two options – Basic or Full

MulitLink Technology

MultiLink

An addition to the Remote Control of a single machine, our MultiLink technology facilitates the use of multiple electric tuggers, working in sync under the control of a single operator.

Line follow

Line follow

This technology ensures an electric tugger follows a line on the floor, delivering highly accurate repeated movement between points.

Line Following capability is available via two options – Remote Operator Control or AGV.

Natural navigation

AGV

Navigation technology ensures the machine travels between destinations, interacting with your environment as required to take into account ideal routes, other machines, and operational factors.

Additional options

Electric tuggers come equipped with an array of standard safety features and intuitive operator features. However, if you need something extra, additional options will influence the price:

Battery capacity

Battery & power

MasterMover electric tuggers and tows are available with various battery options, including lithium.

The specifics of your application will dictate what battery and charger are needed and whether spare batteries are required if you need continuous operation and fast turn-around times.

Optimize safety systems

Safety options

Whilst MasterMover electric tuggers are packed with safety features as standard, such as emergency stop buttons and anti-crush mechanisms there are several additional safety options available.

These include audible and visual alert systems, enhanced speed control functionality and secondary remote-control units for emergency stops.

What if I need something different?

Sometimes a standard electric tugger solution isn’t the right fit for your operations.

You might require a special connection point to your load, need custom technology options, or have a unique application.

In this case, our Customer Engineering team will conduct an in-depth evaluation to identify a suitable solution. For applications requiring special custom designs or innovative technological solutions, our team is always on hand to provide a customized price.
