What is an electric tug?
The electric tug name
“Electric tug” may be a term that is not familiar to everyone as these machines can be known by various names. Some are used frequently and others seemingly invented by individual companies.
Pedestrian tugs, electric tuggers, tow tugs, powered tugs and load movers are just a few examples with electric tug being the most common and perhaps the most appropriate.
With the concept still comparatively new, at least compared to fork lift trucks, the industry is gradually settling on electric tug as a standard.
What does an electric tug do?
To put it simply, electric tugs move heavy loads.
For them to do that, an electric tug either needs its load to have wheels itself or be sat on a platform that has wheels (normally referred to as a bogie or skate), much the same as a fork lift truck relies on the load being palletised.
Electric tugs are pedestrian operated machines and just like a pedestrian fork lift truck, you walk with it. Therefore they are ideal for moving large loads over relatively short distances, most often between assembly stages in an industrial environment, but also in the commercial and retail sector.
As the name would suggest, electric tugs are battery powered. Having no engine means there are no fumes, making it perfect for use indoors.

Why would you want one?
Electric tugs are often bought to complete a task that was performed previously either by a fork lift truck or one that was handled manually.
Tugs are better suited to moving loads short distances over one level, do not require a licence to use and are much smaller than fork lift trucks meaning internal road networks can be used for more value adding production.
It is no longer acceptable to allow staff to move heavy loads by hand and so providing them with a tug, even to move 500 kg roll cages will reduce injuries, claims and increase productivity.
